Lgbti activists ask the administration of Nicolás Maduro to recognize the right to change names for gender reasons, to repeal an article of the Organic Code of Military Justice that penalizes homosexual relations and to discuss a draft marriage law in the National Assembly egalitarian civil. They urge the Ombudsman, Alfredo Ruíz, to rule on these issues
Three Lgbti activists served more than 24 hours in chains this Tuesday in front of the Ombudsman’s Office, located in Caracas, to demand a statement of support for this group in the face of petitions and claims for equal rights.
The activist and protest spokesperson, Richelle Bricenohe told the news agency EFE that during the night the three men who chained themselvesone of them in a wheelchair, were pressured by officials of the Bolivarian National Police (PNB) to give up the demonstration.
“There was a lot of pressure from the Bolivarian National Police (…) To be removed, they were threatened with removing their chains, with chopping their chains because (they claimed) that this is a security zone, because their actions are illegal” Briceno said.

He reiterated that the protest will continue until the Ombudsman, Alfredo Ruiz, or some other “weight” authority comes to the place to start a dialogue between the parties.
“The three boys, including a person with motor disabilities, are not willing to lift any chains, on the contrary, they are threatening to start a hunger strike in the next few hours if there is no response from the Ombudsman’s Office or from any authority”, I reiterate.
The protesters and the Venezuelan Lgtbi collective demand the repeal of an article of the military justice code that penalizes homosexual relations with up to three years in prison, a matter on which Ruiz has not ruled.
They also request that the administration of Nicolás Maduro recognize the right to change their name for gender reasons and that a draft law on equal civil marriage be discussed in the National Assembly.
