There has been a lot of hype and confusion about the metaverse, but no one can own the metaverse as it takes collaboration to build it, Pekka Lundmark, CEO of Nokia, commented on his personal blog.
“Our experts believe that the rise of the metaverse will not depend on a single device or piece of hardware. Instead, it will begin to take shape – and evolve – from complementary technologies such as cloud, edge computing, artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, IoT, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and twins. digital,” added the manager.
Pekka Lundmark explained that the vision at Nokia is that the metaverse will evolve from two broader trends of digital-physical fusion and human empowerment, and that by 2030, everything that makes sense to connect will be connected.
“We believe that the metaverse will eventually come to touch every facet of our work and social lives, to a degree that no single company will be able to design and build all the elements that are required. No one will be able to own the metaverse. We need collaboration to build it and to ensure it reaches its full potential,” added Pekka Lundmark.
He explained that there will not be a single metaverse, but instead there will be three main metaverses: Consumer, Business, and Industrial. “While most of the focus has been on video games and entertainment within the Consumer Metaverse, it is in the Enterprise and Industrial Metaverses where the true value lies and where we have the opportunity to create and scale solutions for the great global challenges in energy, climate, productivity, growth and inclusion”.
By way of example, he spoke about the Brooklyn Bridge, located in New York “It is already possible to create a digital twin –a completely virtual 3D representation– of the physical bridge, down to the last detail. This would allow us to chart the life cycle of the bridge from its inception and up to 50 or 100 years in the future.”
He added that using the Business and Industrial metaverses, in the 21st century it would be possible to build the Brooklyn Bridge in less than a third of the time and the goal would be to achieve it with zero fatalities.
“At Nokia we are already laying the foundation with future-ready networks that can meet the performance demands of the metaverse – and more broadly of a digital world – without compromising security or reliability. And we’re looking to build a collaborative advantage by bringing multiple players into a digital ecosystem where we can create more solutions and more value for everyone involved. As we move from the 5G to the 6G era, as digitization reaches every industry and the digital-physical fusion touches every facet of our lives, no single company can create or own all of the required items”.
