Brazil will require a vaccine from soccer players

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) will require proof of vaccination against Covid-19 to players who want to register for tournaments in 2022, according to a new health protocol published on Friday. The vaccination certificate will be mandatory for “athletes and members of the technical commission”, under penalty of not being authorized to participate in the matches of the 2022 season, this protocol specifies.

This requirement will be valid both for the matches of the Brazilian championship (April-November) and for those of the Brazilian Cup (February-October) and the presentation of a negative text to Covid will continue to be mandatory before each match, according to this protocol.

“A large proportion of hospitalized patients are not vaccinated. The Omicron variant is highly contagious and athletes must play without a mask. What we can do then is demand that everyone get vaccinated to avoid serious cases,” Jorge Pagura, president of the CBF’s medical commission, explained to the Globo Esporte website.

Although it is not mandatory, many cities in Brazil require a vaccine to enter stadiums, tourist places, bars or sports halls, among other establishments open to the public. Brazil, the second most affected country in the world by the pandemic with more than 622,000 deaths, broke its daily record for infections this week with 204,854 new cases registered in one day. Brazil has vaccinated almost 70% of its 213 million inhabitants with two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine.
