They demand a bridge from the re-elected mayor of El Castillo that he promised in his previous term

The Ortega mayor Rigoberto Antonio Obando Flores assumes another term with broken promises in front of the El Castillo commune, in the department of Río San Juan. He was re-elected in complete “silence” and without competition in the voting on November 6. His political opponents never made themselves known.

Since his tenure, in 2013, he has not fulfilled his promises to improve the roads. Every year it is the same problem of access to the communities of the municipality of El Castillo. There, the access bridge to several communities is missing.

The project would bring benefits to the economy of the families of the municipality of El Castillo. It would make it easier for trucks to enter and exit to supply the communities with basic products, it would make it easier for agricultural products to leave the municipality and, what is best, producers would not have to pay the ferry to cross the river.

One of the main products that comes out of that town is the African palm oil produced by the Palmares de El Castillo SA company. On several occasions they have had mishaps crossing the river, the oil pipes have overturned, the oil has spilled spilled into the tributary, causing pollution, and they themselves have had to buy their own barge to carry the heavy vehicles.

danger on the road

On August 28, 2017, a tragic accident occurred in the Sábalos River in the place known as La Rampla. The Contreras transport bus, which was taking passengers from San Carlos to Buena Vista, had mechanical failures at its crossing. While parked, its brakes failed and it slid into the river with passengers inside. Not everyone managed to get out and the tragedy left nine people dead, including two minors.

Diana, was one of those affected by that fact. There her mother died, a merchant who traveled to the municipality of El Castillo from Managua to sell merchandise. “These have been difficult years, the family disintegrated, I am left alone, two of my brothers stayed with their grandparents and the youngest with his father, the fear that a tragedy will happen again at this intersection is still alive in the families, fear, anguish and sadness seize us whenever we pass through this place”, he exposes.

With the tragedy, the municipality of El Castillo, headed by Obando Flores himself, promised the residents that to avoid a new accident they would proceed to build the bridge that connects sector 1 and sector 2 of Boca de Sábalo, a promise that has already been had done during his previous term. But it still doesn’t do it. To this day, the population is still waiting for the bridge.

Before the 2022 municipal elections, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure (MTI) visited the municipality of El Castillo and once again hopes that Obando Flores will now comply with the construction of the bridge.
