Santo Domingo, Nov 21 (EFE).- A 4-year-old boy presents the second imported case of anger in the Dominican Republic after entering the country from Haiti, the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance reported on Monday.
The minor, a Haitian national, entered the Dominican Republic on November 18 through the Dajabón border area and was hospitalized after maintaining signs of the disease for two days in Port-au-Prince, according to a Public Health statement.
Upon admission to the Padre Fantino de Montecristi hospital, the child had whitish watery diarrhea, vomiting, dry mouth, weak pulse and drowsiness, for which he was immediately hydrated and stabilized.
The stool sample that was taken gave a positive result for cholera this Sunday.
Although the little one has not evacuated for 24 hours and remains stable with good spirits and appetite, he is still admitted for observation.
The local health authorities carried out the epidemiological siege of the minor’s close relatives, but he only resides with his parents, who have been medicated preventively since they did not present symptoms of the disease at the moment.
The preventive alert against cholera in the Dominican Republic continues, with the aim of early detection of eventual cases and acting on any suspicion due to the outbreak that is registered in neighboring Haiti and that has caused, according to the latest official data, 174 deaths.
There are more than 9,300 suspected cases, some 800 confirmed and more than 8,100 hospitalized in nine Haitian departments.
In the Dominican Republic last October the first imported case of cholera was confirmed, corresponding to a 32-year-old woman of Haitian nationality who had recently returned from the neighboring country.
The Dominican Ministry of Health requests that measures such as consuming well-cooked food and beverages prepared with potable water be followed, protecting water from possible means of infection and in all cases boiling it before consumption or washing hands frequently before consuming food and After going to the bathroom.
In addition, it is urged to go to the nearest health center in case of acute diarrhea and notify the health authorities of possible cases.
