Second imported case of cholera reported in the DR

The Ministry of Public healththrough the Vice Ministry of Collective Health and the General Directorate of Epidemiology, notified this Monday the confirmation of the second imported case of cholera in the countrycorresponding to a 4-year-old male patient of Haitian nationality.

Through a press release, the Ministry indicated that the minor entered the country through Dajabón on November 18 and was admitted to the hospital Father Fantino of Montecristibecause he had been in Port-au-Prince (Haiti) for two days with symptoms of the disease.

Upon arrival at the hospital, the patient presented whitish watery diarrhea, vomiting, dry mouth, weak pulse and drowsiness. It was immediately hydrated and stabilized, then the stool sample was taken, obtaining the positive result at anger yesterday, Sunday 20.

The epidemiologist’s report Francisca Kasse certifies that currently the patient has not evacuated for 24 hours, and remains stable, in good spirits and appetite, but admitted for observation purposes.

Similarly, the Provincial Health Directorate of Monte Cristi carried out a epidemiological fence with close relativesdetermining that the minor only resides with his parents, who were medicated preventively because so far they do not present symptoms of having been infected.

The statement states that the Ministry of Public health continues to work on the preventive alert for this disease, executing actions for the early detection of cases, by activating the response mechanisms to act against a suspected case with the local institutions.

Likewise, the Health authorities exhort the population not to be alarmed and stay tuned for reports in relation to the disease and apply the measures of place.

Also, continue with hygiene measures, highlighting among the main ones: consuming well-cooked food and drinks prepared with drinking water; protect the water from possible means of infection and in all cases boil it before consumption; wash hands frequently before eating food, and after going to the bathroom; go to the nearest health center, in case of acute diarrhea; notify the occurrence of cases to the authorities of Public health and be attentive to the recommendations issued by the Ministry of Health.

It is recalled that on October 20, the Health authorities notified the first imported case of cholera, In the case of a 32-year-old Haitian citizen.
