A few weeks ago, President López Obrador asked the Peruvian Congress to grant permission to his president to travel to Mexico to receive the presidency of the Summit, because not doing so, he commented then, would be a mistake.
“I think it would be, with all due respect to his policies, it would be a mistake not to allow him to leave, because it is a matter of complete interest to all the Peruvian people, it is not a partisan matter. And I hope that there is reconciliation and that democracy is accepted in Peru. President Pedro Castillo won in democratic elections, but they won’t let him, he has only been there for a short time and they have been harassing him. Of course, they have their policies because it is also a free, independent, sovereign country, but I take this opportunity to respectfully urge the president of Peru to be with us, because he is a member,” he said.
In January of this year, Mexico assumed the pro tempore presidency of the Pacific Alliance, which is made up of Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru.
In this edition, the presence of the Candidates for Member State was also expected: from Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, and from Costa Rica, Rodrigo Chaves; as well as representatives of Canada, Korea and Singapore, in their capacity as Candidates for Associated State of the Summit.
