One third of those enrolled in the Enem missed the tests

The National High School Exam (Enem), after 2 years of the pandemic, returns to levels of absences considered within historical normality, according to the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (Inep). The exam, applied on the last Sundays, the 13th and 20th, had the participation of around 2.5 million students on the first day of the test and approximately 2.3 million on the second day. In total, around 3.4 million were enrolled. One third of those enrolled in the Enem missed the tests

The Enem balance sheet was released today (21) by Inep. “In general, it was a successful exam, we had few cases of reapplication, the abstention rates were within historical normality. We know that during the pandemic we had a slightly higher abstention rate, but that has already returned [a patamares normais]”, assessed the Minister of Education, Victor Godoy.

In all, 3,476,226 participants were enrolled in the exam, 3,409,682 for the paper version and 66,544 for the digital one. Of these participants, 2,490,880 took the tests on the first day and 2,351,513 on the second. Enem recorded, last year, the record abstention, when more than half of those enrolled missed the second day of test??

The historical average of abstention in Enem, according to Inep, is around 27%. This year, absences were 26.7% on the first day and 32.4% on the second day. “From the first day to the second day there was a variation of more or less 137 thousand people [no Enem impresso]which is a low number generally considering that student who does not do well on the first day of the test and ends up being discouraged for the second test”, said the minister.

Problems

According to Inep, 5,126 participants were eliminated from the tests for disrespecting the exam rules, that is, for carrying electronic equipment, not complying with the inspectors’ guidelines, using printed materials or leaving the test site before the allowed time.

The municipality recorded that, during the exam, at least 193 students were affected by logistical problems such as medical emergencies during the exams, temporary interruption of electricity and problems with water supply. Of these, 162 were taking the printed Enem and 31, the digital one.

With regard to students affected by conflicts and police operations such as those that took place this weekend in Rio de Janeiro, in Manguinhos and Jacarezinho, in the north zone of the city of Rio de Janeiro, the Minister of Education, Victor Godoy, said that the cases will be analysed. On social networks, yesterday (20), students living in these places reported that, due to shootings, they were unable to attend the tests.

“It did not arrive yet [ao Inep], but if it arrives we will evaluate it. If the students are not to blame and, as a result of some action by the state, we will certainly do everything possible so that they are not harmed and are sent for reapplication”, he informed.

digital exam

The digital Enem recorded the highest number of absences. More than half of the students enrolled in this modality did not attend the exam. According to Godoy, this shows that the digital Enem “has not caught on yet”.

“Brazil is very extensive, with many places where the test is applied, and this model of taking computing to the classroom, for the student to take the test with the computer, is not very scalable. You have to find a model that is scalable , which is attractive and maintains the security of the exam”, defended the minister.

future of enem

According to Inep’s deputy president, Carlos Moreno, the autarchy is developing the Enem 2024 matrices, which should be adapted from the new high school?? “This will be applied in 2024, but still this year we want to disclose and publish the Enem schedule for next year, 2023, so that people can program themselves in advance”, he said.

Results

Inep also released the schedule of the next stages of the Enem. The templates for the objective tests will be made available at 6 pm on Wednesday (23) at Inep portal?? The final results will be released on February 13, 2023 at Participant’s Page??

The newsroom mirror, with the details of the corrections, will only be released in April, along with the notes of trainee participants, that is, those who have not yet completed high school and took the exam just to test their knowledge. This year’s theme was “Challenges for the appreciation of communities and traditional peoples in Brazil”.

After the publication of the Enem results, enrollment will be opened for selection processes that use assessment as a means of entering higher education, on a date yet to be announced.

Enem selects students for vacancies in public higher education, by the Unified Selection System (Sisu), for scholarships in private institutions, by the University for All Program (Prouni), and serves as a parameter for the Student Financing Fund (Fies). The results can also be used to enter Portuguese educational institutions that have an agreement with Inep.
