MADRID, Spain.- The Cuban singer Chanel Terrero joined the personalities who have refused to travel to Qatar to participate in the Soccer World Cup, due to the constant human rights violation in the Asian country.
Chanel, whose song “Toke” accompanies the Spanish team during the World Cup, declared to the press in a photocall: “I am not going to Qatar. My song is not the World Cup song, it is my second single that has been selected to support ‘La Roja’”.
Asked about Shakira’s decision, who will not attend because of the violation of women’s rights, she replied: “I agree with her, I am not going to Qatar for the same reason either. It’s a personal decision.”
Chanel confirms that she is not going to Qatar because human rights are not respected there: “I am not going to the World Cup in Qatar for that reason. When I said for the first time that I was clear about my principles, I was referring to this” https://t.co/18h9mnqYyQ pic.twitter.com/Y2Yq9IAuIm

The song “Take”premiered at the end of last October, was chosen by RTVE to represent Spain.
“It has a lot of magic because it is the first song that I compose, the first with which I got into a recording studio. We decided it was my single and this opportunity came up. In principle `Toke´ was not written expressly for the World Cup. However, among the available options from various record companies, RTVE selected it”, the Cuban nationalized Spanish had said after the premiere of the song.
In addition to Chanel Terrero and Shakira, other personalities They have expressed their rejection of Qatar as the venue for the World Cup. Among them are the British singer Dua Lipa, the reggaetonero JBalvin, the popular Spanish streamer Ibai Plains and British rock star Rod Stewart.
The latter, invited for 15 months to offer a concert at the World Cup, rejected the performance for which they would pay him a million dollars.
“They offered me over a million dollars 15 months ago to play. I turned it down. It didn’t seem right to go,” said the 77-year-old musician.
The exploitation of workers during the construction of soccer stadiums and discrimination against women and the LGBTIQ+ community in Qatar are among the main reasons why many artists have refused to participate in the World Cup.
