Undersecretary for Crime Prevention, Eduardo Vergara: “We give the same importance to objective criminality as to the feeling of fear”

Undersecretary for Crime Prevention, Eduardo Vergara: "We give the same importance to objective criminality as to the feeling of fear"

Considering that according to the latest edition of the Criteria Survey, close to 70% of Chileans “prefer security over freedom”, Vergara pointed out that the Executive is working so that “people can exercise their right to be safe in public spaces, on a day-to-day basis, do not stop doing and carrying out actions because you are afraid”.

In this regard, he added that to deal with this type of phenomenon, such as insecurity, “an effort is required that goes beyond the Ministry of the Interior, and it also has to go beyond the public border.” For its part, the government authority affirmed that security must continue to be seen as a right, not as a limitation nor as a privilege, because “it is a guarantor so that freedoms can be exercised, but also other rights.”

In this sense, the Undersecretary for Crime Prevention pointed out that as a Government they made the decision to give the same importance to objective crime, the data and the number of victims, as to the feeling of fear. This, because in his opinion, “when a person stops doing his daily life or changes his life patterns because he is afraid, for us he deserves the same importance.”

In this sense, he stressed that although there has been a drop in the rates of violent vehicle theft thanks to the reinforcement of the police, assisting the secondary market, and public-private work, this is no reason to rejoice. “We have never celebrated a casualty, but we have verified work that has made it possible to reduce violent vehicle theft,” he stated.

Finally, the authority assured that for the Executive “it is very important that we have a way of evaluating what we do in security, but as long as there are victims of violent robbery or in any case, as a Government we will not rest.” Words that are part of a complex political context, where precisely this Monday the Minister of the Interior and Public Security, Carolina Tohá, will receive the representatives of the Chilean parties at the Palacio de la Moneda. rejected in the first instance by the Chamber of Deputies and Deputies.
