Manuel Van Oordt, CEO of Latam Airlines Peru, provided details of the deadly accident that broke out after the crash between a commercial plane and a Lima Airport Partners (LAP) vehicle, at the Jorge Chávez del Callao airport.
”No emergency was reported within the flight, the flight was in optimal condition and had permission to take off. He ran into a truck on the runway and we don’t know what that truck was doing there,” Van Oordt told reporters.
He added that it is the control tower that provides permission for any vehicle to enter the airstrip. “We are waiting to clarify this fact, we have not had any coordination (with LAP)… There are very precise protocols for takeoff and they had been complied with, but when the plane is in the race it is very difficult for it to stop,” he added.
Latam Peru indicated that all those passengers affected by the closure of operations of the Jorge Chávez International Airport will have the following travel flexibility options:
Passengers with flights to and from Lima, in addition to those who make a connection through that air terminal between Friday, November 18 and Monday, November 21, will be able to access a change of date up to 15 days from the original flight date, without difference in rates or fine, or they may request a full refund of their money.
“From Latam we are giving all the facilities so that our passengers can change their flights at no cost. We ask you to be attentive to the rescheduling times, ”said Van Oordt.
