National Day to Combat Aedes aegypti is this Saturday

To reiterate the warnings about care and prevention involving dengue, chikungunya and Zika virus, Brazil instituted the penultimate Saturday of November as the National Day to Combat aedes aegypti??National Day to Combat Aedes aegypti is this Saturday

The date, celebrated today (19), was not chosen by chance. The period in which the mosquito spreads the most is the summer, a season in which, in Brazil, it is accompanied by rain, making the scenario favorable to Aedes and dangerous for the victims of these diseases that usually plague the country.

In order to recall some precautions repeatedly publicized by health authorities, the Ministry of Health launched, at the end of October, the National Campaign to Combat the Aedes aegypti Mosquito, which provides for the placement of advertisements on radio, TV and internet with information about the main outbreaks of mosquito proliferation, as well as on preventive measures.

during launch, Minister Marcelo Queiroga said that the success of the campaign depends directly on the collaboration of society. “We can’t do this alone,” he said.

Simple actions can help fight mosquitoes, especially in the backyard. Among the measures that can be adopted are: avoiding stagnant water in small objects, tires, bottles and potted plants; keep the water tank always closed and carry out periodic cleaning; sealing wells and cisterns; and dispose of garbage properly.

Mobilization

To the Brazil Agency, the Ministry of Health emphasized that this mobilization must involve states, municipalities and society as a whole. “A quick inspection of 10 minutes is a simple action that can interrupt the mosquito’s life cycle”, informed the folder.

“The guideline is to dedicate a few minutes a day to eliminating Aedes outbreaks. Social participation is essential to win the fight against the mosquito that transmits dengue, chikungunya and Zika viruses. Carrying out community joint efforts is a way to involve, mobilize and engage the population in the fight against Aedes aegypti”, he added.

According to the latest epidemiological bulletin, released on November 7 by the ministry, 1,374,019 “probable cases of dengue in 2022 have been registered so far across the country. the previous year (2021). The disease has already killed 945 people this year.

Also according to the bulletin, until the 43rd week of the year there were 169,646 probable cases of chikungunya, a number 84% higher than that recorded in the same period of 2021. 82 deaths were confirmed this year, but there are still 21 deaths being investigated.

The zika virus had – during the first 41 weeks of 2022 – 9,882 probable cases. An increase of 66.6% compared to the number of occurrences in 2021. “It should be noted that no deaths from zika were reported in the country until the respective week”, reported the epidemiological bulletin.

symptoms and prevention

The Ministry of Health pointed out that the symptoms of dengue, chikungunya or zika are similar. “They include fever of sudden onset, accompanied by headache, body and joint aches, prostration, weakness, pain behind the eyes, rash and itchy skin and red spots on the body, in addition to nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain”, explained.

The orientation is to look for the nearest health unit or service as soon as the first symptoms appear.

“Prevention is the best way to fight the disease. Avoiding stagnant water, emptying bottles, not storing tires in uncovered areas, not accumulating water on slabs or gutters, putting sand in plant pots and covering barrels and water tanks well are some basic initiatives to prevent the proliferation of the vector. Any place of standing water must be eliminated, as that is where the transmitting mosquito lays its eggs”, he reiterated.
