Nicaraguan accused of drug trafficking captured in Costa Rica

Nicaraguan Alexander Zacarías Herrera Hernández, 47, was captured two weeks ago by members of the Costa Rican Public Force at a roadblock in the province of Limón for speeding.

Herrera Hernández had been wanted on a red alert by Interpol for 10 years for having links to a criminal organization linked to homicides in Nicaragua. The subject had gone unnoticed for several years in the province of Limón, where he used a Costa Rican residence card under a false name.

The authorities indicated that the citizen called himself David Antonio Sambola Wilson, a native of Honduras, and Luis Antonio Martínez Lumbí, with whom he managed to evade justice for several years in the area where he was captured. Since October 2013, the Nicaraguan National Police requested Interpol to open a red notice alert for Alexander Zacarías Herrera, born in Bluefields in 1975, for the crime of international drug trafficking.

In a report from the authorities of the neighboring country, they report that in Cayos Perlas, Punta de Lora, 32 nautical miles from Bluefields, Alexander Zacarías Herrera Hernández and his brother Elías Luis Herrera Hernández stored drugs and fuel to supply fast pangas to continue with their route to Honduras, achieving the seizure of 973 packages weighing more than one ton of cocaine.

Elías Luis Herrera was part of a criminal gang known as “Los Tarzanes”, dismantled in 2014 in the Los Lirios de Limón neighborhood, and in 2015 the group was sentenced to serve 36 years in prison. The request details that this Nicaraguan was identified as “dangerous, prone to evasion, violent.”
