Sign Language Translator App Developed in Mexico

Mexico, November 17 (Notistarz/AIMX).- Members of the Academic Body “Advanced Computational Technologies” of the Zumpango University Center of the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico (UAEMéx), central south of the country, develop an application that will allow the recognition of the language of Mexican signs, at the same time that she will act as a translator and tutor in the teaching of the same.

Rafael Rojas Hernández, Full-Time Professor of this campus of the Mexican Autonomous University and member of the Corps, said that the recognition of said language by a mobile application is not new, but its use in the teaching-learning area is. .

“In the application stores of mobile devices there are already courses to learn the Mexican sign language; however, they only contain videos and at no time do they confirm that the learner is doing it correctly, that is, there is no feedback to indicate if the signs are correct”, he stated.

He explained that, through the camera of the mobile device or the computer, this application can be used as a tutor and, in turn, as a translator. Even, she said, in the buildings of the institutions or companies, when accessing the waiting rooms, with a computer that has a camera, she would act as a translator.

The project, Rojas Hernández added, has financing from the Mexican Autonomous Government, which allowed the purchase of the necessary computer equipment to develop it.

He explained that with the support of students from the UAEM Zumpango University Center, information was captured, mainly videos in which various people make signs, for now, of the alphabet, which allows the recognition of hand movements.

Subsequently, he indicated, a database with around 10,000 images was integrated and work began on the movement recognition part to deliver all the data to artificial intelligence.

Likewise, he pointed out, we recovered information such as sign language dictionaries that exist for Mexico City and the states of Puebla, Chihuahua and Baja California. In the same way, existing information was recovered on social networks such as YouTube and TikTok, where some users teach the language through videos.

Rafael Rojas Hernández, Telematics Engineer, Master in Computer Science with a Specialty in Image Processing and Doctor of Education Sciences, said that by the end of 2022 the functional version of the application will be available.
