MADRID, Spain.- The new school year in Cuba, corresponding to 2022-2023 with a start date for this November 28, will begin with a deficit of teachers and a shortage of uniforms.
This week Liván Izquierdo Alonso, first secretary in Ciego de Ávila, declared that “the problem is not only that there are a lack of teachers, but that these absences cannot be resolved.” According to a newspaper report Invasivethere is a deficit of 575 teachers, not including Adult Education, with which it would increase to 764.
According to the local media, among the actions planned to improve teaching coverage, is to achieve the incorporation of all the graduates of the pedagogical training, interviews with the 172 teachers who are considering not joining when the course begins, visits to the 112 inactive teachers due to medical certificates and the 36 on leave without pay, to assess the real possibilities of their incorporation.
In addition, the authorities indicate that they will meet “the main demands of teachers to stop the exodus in the sector.”
On the other hand, the Minister of Education of Cuba, Ena Elsa Velázquez Cobiella, reported that in Cienfuegos there are only 893 skirts for primary school uniforms, a figure that is “very small” compared to those that are needed.
While for secondary education, all of the seventh grade blouses and shirts are missing, and they only have 66% of skirts and 71% of pants.
Quoted by the Cienfuegos radio station Radio City of the Seathe minister blamed the production workshops of Villa Clara and Sancti Spíritus, which is where the Cienfuegos uniforms are made, responsible for this situation.
According to the owner, “once the shortage is delivered, they will expedite the distribution to the markets.”
