The lawyer for Alex Saab’s defense team, Laila Tajeldine, refuted the arguments presented by the United States Attorney’s Office (USA) in which she does not know the diplomatic status of the Venezuelan official, in the face of an “alleged” falsification of documents, including the corresponding passport.
Through various messages posted on Twitter, Tajeldine argued that, among other things, the defense showed correspondences exchanged between the Consular authorities of the Venezuelan Ministry for Foreign Relations and an Office of the United States Department of State in charge of minors’ affairs in the years 2019, 2020, 2021 and even 2022.
On this detail, Tajeldine wrote the following: “Isn’t it the explicit recognition of having meetings with US officials or envoys? But to this is added this new test that leaves no doubt about the recognition of the United States. Is it possible in International Law to recognize a country for some things and not others?
The lawyer stated in another tweet that “as for the passport, the defense dismantled with laws and the proper certifications that Alex Saab’s diplomatic passport is fully valid.”
He also explained that Saab’s defense “made a fool of the Prosecutor’s Office by demonstrating their ignorance on the subject. The defense asked what law establishes that Alex Saab’s diplomatic status depends on publication in the Gazette.
