US condemns arrest of relatives of political prisoners who would meet with US officials

MADRID, Spain.- The United States government condemned the recent arrest of relatives of 9/11 political prisoners who were planning to meet with officials from the United States Embassy in Havana.

“We condemn the Cuban government’s detention of the relatives of jailed 9/11 protesters who were scheduled to meet with US officials today in Havana. Preventing parents from talking about their imprisoned children is unfair and inhumane, ”he said from Twitter Brian A. Nichols, US Department of State Under Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs.

Nichols further stressed that these families “have the right to speak with the international community and anyone else they choose about the condition of their loved ones.”

“We join the calls for the Cuban government to immediately release all those unjustly detained,” he added.

The people arrested are Wilber Aguilar (father of Walnier Aguilar); Marta Perdomo (mother of the brothers Nadir and Jorge Martin); Liset Fonseca (mother of Roberto Fonseca) and Migdalia Gutiérrez Padrón (mother of Brusnelvis Cabrera Gutiérrez).

Marta Perdomo and Liset Fonseca were on their way to the United States Embassy when they were arrested. While Wilber Aguilar and Migdalia Gutiérrez were arrested in their homes after hours of surveillance by State Security agents.

Before the arrest, Wilber Aguilarwhose son is serving a 12-year sentence despite his disability, had shared in facebookk images of the surveillance to which he was subjected.

In his publication he also declared: “The fight for my son’s freedom is strengthened by injustices. (…) Release them, there will be no rest; all the repressors and traitors do not betray me, but the people who suffer and fight for their freedom. Freedom for my son Walnier and all the political prisoners”.
