The Minister of the Interior, Luis Alberto Heber, announced the placement of a corridor of 586 video surveillance cameras, which will cover the departments of Canelones, Maldonado and Rocha. The objective is to inaugurate part of the project, before the summer season, the authorities foresee.
The investment is $5 million, according to Heber said this Wednesday in the Executive Tower. It is a extension to the system that Maldonado already haswhich will now include devices in the Interbalnearia route and route 9.
A direct purchase will be made from the company that currently provides video surveillance cameras to the Municipality of Maldonado. Is a “extension of the contract”, pointed out Heber. The minister added that although it is planned to start the works “now”, it will not be possible to install all the cameras before the summer.
It implies coordination between Antel, UTE, the company and the municipalities, he justified.
The Secretary of the Presidency, Álvaro Delgado, wrote on Twitter: “The extension of the network of video surveillance cameras in the departments of Canelones, Maldonado and Rocha was defined in coordination with the Ministry of the Interior. Thanks to this initiative we will be adding about 600 new cameras for the benefit of everyone’s safety”.
Heber had announced this Tuesday the placement of 2,000 cameras in Montevideo, in those neighborhoods affected by the increase in homicides. They include the police zones 3 and 4.
Operational Zone 3 comprises the neighborhoods of Peñarol, Paso de las Duranas, Lavalleja Sur, Cerrito, Aires Puros, Brazo Oriental, Casavalle, Marconi, Las Acacias, Manga, Puntas del Miguelete, Las Quintas, Barrio Santa María, Settlement 21 de Enero , Maroñas, Flor de Maroñas, Ituzaingó, Punta de Rieles, Piedras Blancas, Bella Italia, among others.
Operational Zone 5 includes the area of the Cerro, La Teja, Paso de la Arena, Pajas Blancas, Nuevo París, Colón, Lezica, Abayubá, Melilla and Conciliación neighborhoods, among others.
