Diana Meizoso, the mother of the two-year-old girl Elizabeth, one of the seven fatalities of the boat sunk by the Cuban authorities in Bahía Honda (Artemisa), maintains her testimony about what happened despite the pressure received during an interrogation in Villa Marista, the headquarters of State Security in Havana.
Meizoso was arrested last Thursday and taken for questioning at the main headquarters of the political police, but she is now with her mother in Bahía Honda. After questions and various pressures, the woman maintains her initial version that the attack by the border guard boat resulted in the “murder” of at least seven of the migrants who were on the boat that was trying to leave the island.
“My sister maintains what she said from the beginning because what she tells is the truth,” she stresses to 14ymedio Héctor Meizoso, uncle of the deceased girl and relative of at least two other of those killed after the collision, Yerandy García Meizoso and Aimara Meizoso. “He is already with our mother after the interrogation in Villa Marista,” confirmed the young man.
The mother’s position contrasts with that of other survivors who have been pressured to change their testimony, as detailed to Radio Martí Dianelis Portales Meizoso, sister of Yerandy García.
The mother’s position contrasts with that of other survivors who have been pressured to change their testimony, according to what Yerandy García’s sister told Radio Martí
Portales Meizoso recounted that State Security officials made some of the survivors change, under pressure, their initial statements about what happened, and that she herself was singled out “for filming and broadcasting the audiovisuals.”
“The police came here, to my house, in front of my three children, where they tell me that I was summoned to the Police. I ask them what for and they tell me they don’t know,” Dianelis explained.
Despite all this, Diana Meizoso maintains her initial testimony and until a few days ago she had no qualms about speaking to the media to tell what happened.
“They rammed the boat and broke it in the middle,” he said at the beginning in an interview with Radio Televisión Martí, and detailed how one of the Cuban officers warned them, before turning around and heading towards the rafters’ boat and destroying it: “Now I’m going to split them in half.”
At least 25 people were traveling on the boat and, in addition to the Meizosos, Israel Gómez, Indira Serrano Cala, Nathali Acosta Lemus and Omar Reyes Valdés died. One more is still missing.
Considering them responsible for what it considers a “cold-blooded murder,” the Foundation for Human Rights in Cuba has on its list of repressors four officers from the Border Guard Troops: Raidel Rodríguez López, Leovanys Cutiño Rodríguez, Jorge Argelio Samper Muarra and Jorge Luis Navarro Nolasco.
