With Guillermo Ochoa and Andrés Guardado as leaders and in the fifth World Cup of their respective careers, Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino presented this Monday the list of 26 players for the Mexican national team for Qatar-2022.
Ochoa, 37, and Guardado, 36, will join the select group of footballers present in five World Cups in Qatar-2022 after having both made their debut in Germany-2006.
In addition to Guardado, eight other players who play in European teams were cited, including three defenders: Gerardo Arteaga (Genk from Belgium), Jorge Sánchez (Ajax from the Netherlands) and Johan Vásquez (Cremonese from Italy).
Three midfielders also play in Europe: Edson Álvarez (Ajax), Erick Gutiérrez (PSV Eindhoven of the Netherlands) and Orbelín Pineda (AEK Athens of Greece).
Two strikers were summoned from European clubs: Raúl Jiménez (Wolverhampton of England) and Hirving ‘Chucky’ Lozano (Napoli of Italy).
From the preliminary list of 31 players, Tata Martino ruled out one due to injury: Jesús ‘Tecatito’ Corona, Sevilla striker.

The historic El Tri, forward Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández, of the Los Angeles Galaxy of the MLS, was finally left out of Martino’s call, after having played the last three World Cups (2010, 2014 and 2018).
