Havana Cuba. – Cuban activist Ketty Méndez Molina announced this week the release of “Presos por qué”, the song that gives title to a personal project that aims to raise awareness and get help for Cuban political prisoners.
“They are suffering from hunger, illnesses and they don’t have medicine; they dress and wear torn clothes and shoes. It is not fair because all those brothers took to the streets to protest not only for themselves and their families, but for all Cubans. Economically, their families also suffer from their absence. It is our duty to raise our voices and support them,” Méndez Molina told CubaNet.
According to Prisoners Defenders, at least 1,015 political prisoners continue to be held in the regime’s prisons. A report issued by the organization, last May, highlights the presence of 36 children behind bars and the convictions of 718 people for political reasons, 124 of them with sentences exceeding 10 years in prison.
For more than 15 years, the Cuban authorities have also harassed Méndez Molina for demanding medical attention and better living conditions for his daughter. Jennifer Larrea Mendez, who suffers from autism and malnutrition. Her persecution has led her to become involved in the opposition movement to the Government.
Twenty years ago he decided to abandon his passion for music. She now takes it up again because of her great capacity as a communication vehicle and to spread a message that “reaches the hearts of Cubans who live inside and outside the country.”
“I can’t say: this month I’m going to get a few pesos for my brother prisoners, because the government doesn’t allow me to work. I returned to music, in part, to vent the suffering that seeing so many injustices causes me, but also as a tool to monetize and be able to really help them, because they do not solve anything with our tears, ”he said.
His song, he says, is a demand for freedom for the prisoners of 11J but “also for all those who, anonymously, or without being mentioned much, are prisoners of the dungeons of Castroism.”
“Presos por qué”, written and sung by Méndez Molina with the accompaniment of a guitar, lasts just over three minutes. can be heard on the activist’s Youtube channel.
