According to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), in 2021 the highest percentage of people with diabetes mellitus was recorded on the coast (5.8%) and a lower percentage in the mountains (3.3%) and jungle (4.0%). Likewise, according to INEI data, in the same year, diabetes affected the female population more (5.4%) compared to the male population (4.5%).

In this context, the Department of Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable, Rare and Orphan Diseases (DENOT) of the Ministry of Health has been carrying out actions for the early identification of people at risk of suffering from diabetes, management of risk factors, diagnosis and treatment of people with this disease and prevention and treatment of its complications.
