On January 11, Law 567, which creates the System of Guarantees and Comprehensive Protection of the Rights of Children and Adolescents, and dictates other provisions, was approved in the third debate.
Through this initiative, the objective is to establish a public policy for the recognition and protection of the human rights of children and adolescents throughout the territory of the Republic of Panama, and for nationals who are abroad.
The child protection officer of the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef), Gina de La Guardia, explained that the objective of this approved regulation is the reorganization of the institutions and their functions to improve and achieve a greater reach to the protection of children and adolescents.

“The best interests of the child is a mechanism that allows us to make a decision, but based on what is best for the child and adolescent for the guarantee of their rights,” he stressed.
De La Guardia specified that bill 567 also aims to preserve the family nucleus, which is the first environment, the first circle of security for every child.
