MIAMI, United States. – Cuban official media reported this week that the Morón Railroad Terminal, declared a National Monument in 2000 and the second largest of its kind in the country, will undergo a repair process to reverse the “deplorable state in which it is found.”
The building was inaugurated on July 14, 1924. According to the official gazette Granmathe Cuban authorities want the property to reach its centenary “totally renovated”.
However, the official media also alluded to the difficulty of the restoration process due to “the lack of resources.”
Although in 2010 the Railway Terminal received the National Conservation Award, the deterioration, neglect and lack of maintenance took their toll.
The repair of the property is valued at 3.4 million pesos and will begin on the outside of the building, with actions on the roofs and eaves, he told Granma Kadileisy Pelier Pérez, director of the Base Business Unit that manages the Terminal. “A specialized construction brigade will be in charge of the construction objects, always respecting the original values of their architecture”, he detailed.
In 2023, according to the official schedule, the conservation, renovation, change of carpentry and hydraulic networks will be carried out.a
According to numerous sources, it is one of the most beautiful colonial-style buildings in Cuba, with its architecture influenced by those of the southern United States, along with elements of French carpentry. Meanwhile, its interior has an art deco look.
Already in 2019 the property benefited from the change of the wooden beams, the replacement of the deteriorated French tiles, among other tasks, closer to the makeup than to the complete restoration, he indicated Granma.
At that time, it was necessary to repair the eaves, the hydro-sanitary installations, modernize the electrical system to assume the current loads, change the carpentry and solve the existence of improvised internal divisions.
