MIAMI, United States. — The United States Coast Guard reported today the deportation of 83 Cuban rafters who had been intercepted between Sunday and Monday in waters near the Florida Keys.
The 83 repatriated rafters had tried to reach the United States in different groups.
Three of the vessels were intercepted last Sunday in waters south of Grassy Key, Dry Tortugas and Marathon Key, while three other groups were detained on Monday: one seven miles south of Woman Key, another about 10 miles south. from Lower Matecombe Key, and the latter about 14 miles south of Duck Key.
A report from that entity indicates that the migrants were returned to the island by the crew of the Richard Etheridge coast guard.
The note contains statements by Lieutenant Connor Ives, of the Seventh Coast Guard District, who reiterated his call for Cubans not to try to reach the United States illegally.
“Find safe and legal routes to come to the United States. The Coast Guard, along with our partners, will continue to stop illegal migration at sea and return people to their country of origin or departure,” the officer said.
Since October 1, 2022, Coast Guard crews have intercepted 1,702 Cubans, more than a quarter of the total number of migrants from the Island who were detained and deported in the same period of fiscal year 2022, ended last 30 of September.
