This Saturday the national appointment of Comunes was held, one of the three parties that make up the Broad Front. The community, part of the government base, summoned its militants to develop a political synthesis of the current social moment and define a party roadmap for the coming months.
The meeting takes place almost a week after the official conclave that was convened by President Gabriel Boric last Sunday, November 6, and where the main conclusion was to order the two government coalitions, Approve Dignity —FA, PC and FRVS— and Democratic Socialism —PR, PPD, PL and PS— in a single alliance with the aim of promoting with greater unity a program of reforms with their respective prioritization.
According to the president of the community, Marco Velarde, the meeting would seek to establish the priorities that the party will have in the coming months, but he emphasized that “here the most important is the pension reform so that Chileans have higher pensions.”
“Also attacking emergencies as important as the rise in the cost of living, we put a point on the table that is being addressed today. That it is the rise in the price of public transport, that we hope that the Government attends to it and we can freeze the rise, ”he added.
“We are a party that has had hard times in the last year in a very challenging context for the country and the left, that we have to be the Government,” admitted Javiera Toro, Minister of National Assets and former president of the community.
It is that the store that has three deputies, Camila Rojas, Claudia Miz and Emilia Schneider, and two regional councilors, in Iquique and Copiapó, has faced difficult times in recent months. In May of this year, the current board of directors, headed by Marco Velarde, was elected after the crisis left by ex-militant Karina Oliva, due to the irregular financing of her campaign for governor of Santiago.
Added to this is the fact that in October a letter of resignation was published by more than 170 militants, including Mayor Gonzalo Montoya, who belonged to the sector that at the time promoted Oliva’s candidacy.
The deputy Emilia Schneider assured in the meeting that “the forces of change experienced a very hard defeat on September 4, but we have to be aware that this cannot diminish our conviction that the cycle of changes is open and is necessary (…) we have to review ourselves, make a self-criticism, but above all think about how we continue forward with the demands and the historical program that we have to push”.
Giorgio Boccardo, Undersecretary of Labor and a member of the Comunes, pointed out that it is necessary to “ensure that the most important reforms, which are the Tax and pensions, not only advance in Parliament, but also that we have the ability to explain to the public why these reforms are substantive for a change in their current and future living conditions”.
