The 10 hours of Queen Elizabeth II in Miami

reina, Isabel II

MIAMI, United States. – On May 17, 1991, Queen Elizabeth II landed at Miami International Airport with her husband, Prince Philip of Edinburgh. It was the monarch’s only visit to the city and to South Florida.

The queen was received by the state governor, Lawton Chiles, and the then mayor of the city of MiamiXavier Suárez, who accompanied her to Booker T. Washington High School in Overtown and to the Vizcaya Museum.

From Biscay, Elizabeth II traveled to the royal yacht for an intimate dinner and reception attended by former presidents Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford, as well as their respective wives.

The queen also met environmentalist Marjory Stoneman Douglas, 101. Dade Mayor Steve Clark presented the monarch with a copy of the Douglas classic “Everglades: River of Grass” in a velvet-lined wooden box.

Elizabeth II also had time for a group of young people from Miami Children’s Hospital. Ryan Szurgot, an eight-year-old heart patient, gave her six hospital watches for her grandchildren.

After the formal events of the day in Miami-Dade County, the queen left at the stroke of midnight for Tampa, the next important stop on the queen’s route during her official visit.

In total, Elizabeth II spent 10 hours in the city.
