Nine countries in the OAS declare themselves “disturbed” by electoral farce in Nicaragua

OEA

Nine countries issued a joint statement before the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) to denounce the electoral farce with which the Sandinista Front was awarded all the mayorships of Nicaragua during the municipal votes of November 6.

The statement was read by the representative of the Canadian delegation and points out that the governments of these nations “are disturbed by the entire electoral process and by the results of the elections, which do not reflect the will of the Nicaraguan electorate and which only serve to further impose the power of the regime” by Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.

The other eight countries that join this declaration are the delegations of Antigua and Barbuda, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, United States and Uruguaywho in the declaration describe municipal voting as “fictitious elections”.

”The ruling Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) took control of 100% of the country’s municipal governments. These results should not come as a surprise. As the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) stated last week, the context in which these municipal elections were held was in no way conducive to a free and fair process,” the statement added.

The Supreme Electoral Council (CSE), controlled by Ortega operators, assigned to the Sandinista Front 1,494,688 valid votes, equivalent to 73.7%, giving the party of the Ortega dictatorship an overwhelming advantage to win the 153 municipal elections throughout Nicaragua.

The official data ofl Supreme Electoral Council (CSE) –which lack credibility and cannot be audited– indicate that of the 3,722,884 Nicaraguans summoned to the polls, 2,108,003 supposedly voted.

“On election day, the regime used intimidation at voting centers, including allegedly coercing public servants, to influence the vote,” adds the statement from the OAS delegations.

In the municipal votes, the Sandinista Front annulled all credible political competition and participated only with its historical collaborators: Constitutionalist Liberal Party (PLC), Alliance for the Republic (APRE), Nicaraguan Liberal Alliance (ALN), Independent Liberal Party (PLI Alliance) and Yapti Tasba Masraka Nanih Asla Takanka (Yatama).

OAS Delegations Ratify Commitment to Nicaragua

“When the members of the OAS adopted the Inter-American Democratic Charter in 2001, we agreed that democracy was indispensable for the stability, peace and development of our region and we committed ourselves to uphold these important values and principles. It is up to all of us to condemn this terrible situation and assure the people of Nicaragua that we will not stop denouncing the violation of their civil rights,” underlines the statement before the Permanent Council of the regional organization.

The complaint also insists on denouncing the human rights crisis and the repression derived from the de facto police state imposed by the Ortega Murillo regime.

“It should be remembered that more than 200 civil and political leaders continue to be arbitrarily detained in Nicaragua. Many others have been forced into exile. The legal status of many political parties has been cancelled, and civil society and human rights organizations are being aggressively harassed. In addition, many independent media have been forced to close,” the statement highlights.
