Francisco Aguirre Sacasa is returned to “El Chipote”

The political prisoner and former foreign minister of Nicaragua, Francisco Aguirre Sacasa, was sent back to the cells of the Judicial Assistance Directorate (DAJ) in Managua, known as “El Nuevo Chipote” by decision of the Daniel Ortega regime. The elderly opponent was under a “house by jail” regime.

The Police and the Prosecutor’s Office have not given any argument about this transfer. According to sources consulted by Confidencial, yesterday, Thursday, around 20 police officers arrived at the former diplomat’s home and carried out an inspection. However, they returned this Friday and took him away without justification.

This same week, the dictatorship also returned José Adán Aguerri to El Chipote, where he was under house arrest for suffering from various health problems, sources from the Civic Alliance revealed to Article 66. Aguerri was arrested on June 8, 2021 and on August 18, 2022, after 14 months in prison, he was sent home.

Aguirre Sacasa, 76, despite being under the “home detention” regime, maintained maximum restrictions by the Police at the service of the Ortega dictatorship. A source on condition of anonymity revealed to Article 66 that political prisoners who are serving their prison sentence in their homes are prohibited from making phone calls, cannot have cable television service and are even monitored when going to the bathroom.

Aguirre Sacasa is one of the elderly political prisoners who was deprived of his liberty by Ortega for having expressed his opinion, given statements or simply for being against his questionable government policy.

His relatives, especially his son Roberto Aguirre Sacasa, have repeatedly denounced the situation in which his father finds himself and demanded his immediate release. Sacasa, creator of the series “Riverdale”, regrets not being able to speak or see his father. “The time we have left with him is slipping away. We are not ready to say goodbye,” he added.

Aguirre Sacasa is part of a group of 50 opponents who are imprisoned in El Chipote, accused of “treason against the fatherland”, thus expanding the list to more than 200 political prisoners. For its part, the Ortega dictatorship affirms that there are no prisoners in the country for political reasons, only criminals.
