Regarding the homicides, he added: “75% are linked to confrontations. Am I saying that you have to justify? No death is justified. More work must be done in the fight against drug trafficking and more work must be done on those people who are willing to kill for an illicit business that, among other things, greatly harms people’s health.” In addition, the president remarked that the other crimes have decreased – “The one that has decreased the least is domestic violence,” he clarified – and referred to a comparison made by the portfolio this week, in which it indicates the differences in crimes between the government of the Broad Front and the current one. On Thursday, the Minister of the Interior, Luis Alberto Heber, stated in an interview that “we are in a war” against drug trafficking. “We ask our Easterners to understand that we are at war. We don’t have to have friendly fire. We have to help make that war happen,” the minister said. Heber also referred to the weapons recently seized in an operation carried out in the Villa Española neighborhood. He said that the police had been working for a while in silence, and that the raid could be carried out in the area on Wednesday. “We think there are more weapons,” he said. Regarding the events that have been taking place for some time in the Peñarol neighborhood, he said that the Ministry of the Interior presented a plan and that the ministry does not stay that the deaths that occur are due to “settlement of accounts.” “That’s when we minimize murder,” he said. The senator and leader of Cabildo Abierto, Guido Manini Ríos, met last Thursday with President Luis Lacalle Pou in the Executive Tower to present him the name of the candidate to be the new president of the Board of Transparency and Public Ethics (Jutep).
The lawyer Gabriela Di Longo was the one mentioned to succeed Susana Signorino, who resigned from the agency last week.
Di Longo currently works as legal advisor to the Minister of Public Health, Daniel Salinas.
As Montevideo Portal learned, in the next few days Lacalle will appoint the lawyer and then the document will be sent to the Chamber of Senators, to obtain the necessary permission.
The Jutep was left without a president after Signorino decided to leave, after a tense internship especially with the member of the Broad Front, Ana Ferraris. In addition, another factor that prompted the decision was the agency’s lack of budget.
Currently, the board is meeting with Ferraris and the vice president representing the National Party, Guillermo Ortiz.
