Deficiencies in the physical, chemical and biological properties of the soils of Baracoa have been the causes that affect the low harvest of coconuts. Baracoa is its main producer at the national level.
Recent research deals with the strategy to reduce from six to four months the laying period of coconut palms in nurseries, as well as to increase their survival from 50 to 80%. It was presented at a scientific event in Guantánamo, the fourth edition of the InterGest 2022 Workshop, according to a report by the Cuban News Agency (Acn).
The study corresponds to the Doctor in Agricultural Sciences Karen Alvarado Ruffo, specialist of the Mountain Development Center and professor for more than a decade of the Faculty of Agroforestry of the University of Guantánamo (UG).
Baracoa is the main producer of coconut in Cuba. The low germination of the seed of coconut palms affects the quality and life of seedlings in the fields by 52%, one of the conclusions of the research.
During the event, sponsored by the Provincial Center for Information and Technological Management (CIGET), the researcher also argued, according to the source, that the use of organic fertilizers and biofertilizers improved the environmental quality of the process and benefited the coconut recovery program with more of 4,000 hectares planted.
On October 5, 2016, Hurricane Matthew brought down more than 90% of the existing 6,408 hectares of coconut.
The few standing plants suffered damage, many without the possibility of salvation, for which they undertook the construction of nurseries, the sustained production of postures and effective cultural care for the various productive forms.
