MIAMI, United States. — Cuban-American congressmen Mario Díaz-Balart, María Elvira Salazar and Carlos Giménez, from the state of Florida, as well as Albio Sires from New Jersey and Nicole Malliotakis, both from New York, asked the United States ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas -Greenfield, condemn the Bahia Honda massacre and call for an international investigation to determine if they constitute crimes against humanity.
In a letter signed this Thursday, the representatives asked the diplomat for a statement on the facts before the international organization.
“We write to express our deep concern regarding the sinking, by the Cuban regime, of a boat near Bahía Honda, which resulted in the death of at least seven people, including a girl,” the letter indicates.
The congressmen point out that the sinking of the boat, and the consequent deaths it caused, must be condemned under Article 7 of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Courtwhich defines as “crimes against humanity” actions such as murder or inhumane acts that intentionally cause great suffering, among others.
“The UN and the International Criminal Court have the authority to investigate crimes against humanity,” the letter indicates in reference to the incident, perpetrated by members of the Cuban Border Guard Troops.
The representatives maintain that what happened in the waters to the north of the province of Artemisa is not an isolated event, but is part of a series of systematic violations by the Havana regime.
“Shamefully, the regime has systematically committed human rights violations for six decades, with little repercussion; The perpetrators of these crimes have not been held accountable for the atrocities they have committed, neither in the United Nations nor in the International Criminal Court,” the text specifies.
The sinking of the boat brought with it the death of seven people, including a minor. The Cuban regime assured that it was an accident, something that has been denied by the survivors themselves and their familiesand blamed the United States government for implementing policies that encourage illegal immigration.
