Self-defense groups release a minor in Antioquia

A minor in the power of the group paramilitary Gaitanista Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AGC) was delivered this Thursday to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in a rural area of ​​the department of Antioquia, the organization reported.

Within the framework of a humanitarian operation in the Lower Cauca, where there have been clashes between armed groups recently, the release of the adolescent was achieved who, after being examined by ICRC health personnel, was found to be in “adequate health conditions”according to the statement released by that international organization.

“The ICRC recognizes the trust placed by the parties to the conflict in its humanitarian work,” said Roberta Businaro, head of the ICRC office in Montería, who lamented that although “international humanitarian law protects children and adolescents due to their particular vulnerability (…) they are often directly or indirectly involved in armed conflicts”.

This, in Businaro’s words, “generates profound consequences such as separation from their loved ones or the loss of their life projects”.

In this sensethe release of the minor this Thursday has allowed “the reestablishment of contact with his relatives, who are also victims of the armed conflict,” said the head of the ICRC in Montería.
