Cubalex offers course on civil society and human rights bodies

derechos humanos

MIAMI, United States. – The Cubalex Legal Information Center, sponsored by Civil Rights Defenders, offers a course on civil society and its relationship with international human rights bodies.

The basic level course has the purpose of teaching to recognize and analyze situations in which human rights are violated in the community or country of the participants, according to international standards.

In addition, it is proposed to show how to document cases of violations and how “to use national protection mechanisms -despite their inefficiency- and to file complaints both nationally and internationally,” it reads. the note published by Cubalex and where interested parties can register.

“Cubalex will take advantage of the experience it has on the functioning of the economic, political and social system of Cuba and its mastery of international mechanisms for the protection of human rights to train human rights defenders in the documentation and reporting of violations, for the presentation of individual complaints at the national and international level against the Government of Cuba”, indicates the NGO directed by the Cuban lawyer and exile Laritza Diversent.

Although from now on, the course will include intermediate and advanced levels, now only its basic module is available.

According to Cubalex, it is necessary to denounce human rights violations in Cuba, where “there is no democracy or rule of law, nor conditions, for the moment, for the exercise of civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights.”

“Cubans emigrate from the country looking for better life opportunities because they are legally obliged to carry out economic activities whose income prevents them from maintaining an adequate standard of living. They cannot associate freely to defend their interests. They refrain from expressing their opinions and political preferences for fear of being repressed. They are compelled to integrate social and mass organizations that control their behavior socially”, recalls the organization.

Likewise, it points out that Cubans “have no mechanisms to participate in political and economic decision-making, because the election of members of Parliament does not depend on their votes or political preferences. They cannot run under conditions of equality because the only legally recognized political party, through its social and mass organizations, controls the electoral process to avoid competition and guarantee that its members are the ones elected and appointed to occupy positions in the State. and Government”.

Cubalex also regrets that the record of international complaints against the Cuban State is “low, despite the continuous abuses, especially against human rights defenders.”
