MADRID, Spain.- The President of the United States, Joe Biden, proclaimed November 9 as World Freedom Day, remembering this Wednesday the fall of the Berlin Wall.
In its proclamation called on the people of the United States to remember the hope symbolized by the fall of the Berlin Wall and reaffirm their dedication to freedom and democracy.
In his statements, Biden stated that the courage that collapsed the Berlin Wall is alive in the struggles for freedom in Ukraine, Cuba, Burma and Iran.
“From the Ukrainian soldiers fighting for the very existence of their nation, to the brave women of Iran organizing to secure their human rights and fundamental freedoms, to the people of Burma demanding democracy in the face of brutal violence, to the Cuban citizens who Oppose Oppression: The courage and commitment that helped bring down the Berlin Wall is still alive and powerful around the world today. History shows us that it is from the darkest moments that the greatest progress follows. That is true thanks to brave people who are tilting the arc of history towards a freer and more just world, “said the president.
“To all the people around the world who are fighting for a better future, a future based on democracy and fundamental freedoms, hope and light, decency and dignity, the United States stands with you,” he added.
Regarding the fall of the Berlin Wall, he also recalled that “hope was felt throughout the world when freedom triumphed over tyranny.”
“For decades, the Soviet Union ruled Central and Eastern Europe with an iron fist behind an Iron Curtain. But on that cold night in November 1989, the Berlin Wall came down and East and West Berliners came together to send a clear message: the darkness that drives autocracy can never extinguish the flame of freedom that ignites souls. of free people everywhere. Today, we reflect on the power of the people who yearn for democracy and once again rededicate ourselves to the same cause,” he added.
Joe Biden also considered that the future will be won by countries where members of ethnic and religious minorities can live without harassment, where people can love freely without being subjected to violence, where privacy is respected and personal freedoms are inalienable, and where citizens can vote freely.
