MIAMI, United States. – The young Cuban-American Maxwell Alejandro Frost, 25, became the first member of the so-called Z generation (digital natives or people born at the end of the last century and the beginning of the present) to secure a seat in the House of Representatives of United States, after the mid-term elections held this Tuesday in the northern country.
Frost, who already has the minimum age to enter Congress (25 years), surpassed the Republican Calvin Wimbish in the tenth district of Florida with a percentage close to 59% of the votes, according to the news agency EFE.
“WE HAVE WON! History has been made tonight. We have made history for the people of Florida, for Generation Z and for everyone who believes we deserve a better future.” wrote the young man on Twitter after knowing his victory.
According to EFE, Frost’s family arrived in the United States in the so-called “Flights of Freedom” who left Cuba with refugees in the 1970s.
Last September, at the height of his campaign, the young man told the Spanish agency: “Everyone knows that we need younger people in Congress.”
This Wednesday, Cuban activist Salomé García Bacallao Maxwell reminded on Twitter that Frost had blamed the US embargo on the Havana regime for the popular explosion that occurred in Cuba on July 11, 2021. He also shared a screenshot of Instagram, where Cuban-American businessman Hugo Cancio and Frost can be seen together .
In accordance with international mediaFrost entered the world of politics at just 15 years old, following the emotional impact of a shooting at Connecticut’s Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012. Later, he became one of the national representatives of the March for Our Lives organization, a movement founded after another massacre at a Florida school.
The triumph of the young Cuban-American was not the only milestone of the mid-term elections this Tuesday. An openly lesbian woman was also elected governor for the first time: in Massachusetts, Democrat Maura Healey scored that historic victory.
On the other hand, in New Hampshire the first transgender man was elected in a state legislature: Democrat James Roesener, bisexual, according to the LGBTQ organization Victory Fund.
