The Minister of Transport and Public Works, José Luis Falero, announced that the works of the viaduct in the port boulevard of Montevideo will be enabled on December 12. Originally the inauguration date had been July, but a series of related works delayed its start-up.
The viaduct work almost 2 kilometers long on the South America boulevard at the approaches to the port of Montevideo it will divert the entry of trucks to the port, which will be carried out through the new north access, and will separate the vehicular crossing in the port boulevard from the Central Railroad track, which is under construction and is expected to be completed in May 2023.
“The inauguration implies the authorization of the port and the circulation through the viaduct”, Falero informed this Tuesday, the 8th, after meeting with the President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, in the Executive Tower. In this way, as of December 12, private traffic will be enabled through this route and the entry of heavy traffic to the port of Montevideo.
The works are part of the larger plan to expand the port, it exceeds US$ 140 million investment and came to employ 500 workers directly during its peak of activity.
One of the advantages that the viaduct will have will be that for passenger vehicles, a series of traffic lights will be eliminated, that were previously installed for access to the port of Montevideo on the boulevard.
Also, 5 hectares were reclaimed from the sea for several esplanades. It It will allow a double lane for the entry and exit of trucks to the country’s main port terminal.
