The number of delinquent families in the city of São Paulo reached 1.03 million in October. This is the first time that this amount has been reached since August 2010, when the Federation of Trade in Goods, Services and Tourism of the State of São Paulo (FecomercioSP) began to carry out the Consumer Indebtedness and Default Survey (Peic).
The data, released today (9), also show that 25.5% of São Paulo households had debts in arrears in October. In the last survey, in August, the rate of delinquent households was 24.8%, while in October 2021, the number was 19.7%. In absolute numbers, there was an increase, in the last 12 months, of 240 thousand new homes that did not pay their debts on time.
According to the survey, the situation is more unfavorable for families that belong to the lowest income brackets of the population. For those earning up to ten times the minimum wage, the default rate reached 31.5% and in the range above ten times the minimum wage, the default rate recorded in October was 10.6% of households.
“Low-income families have difficulties in renegotiating debts, since they do not have financial guarantees or protections. Consequently, interest rates are higher, affecting the daily consumption capacity”, said FecomercioSP, in a note.

Fecomercio also released data on formal jobs in the state of São Paulo. According to the survey, the service sector recorded, for the ninth consecutive month, growth in the number of contacts.
From January to September, there were 330,400 new formal jobs, according to the Employment Survey in the State of São Paulo (Pesp).
The São Paulo trade also presented positive numbers. In the first nine months of the year, there were 62,730 new jobs.
