For six more months, the entry into force of Executive Decree 9, which regulates Law 187 of December 2, 2020, “Which regulates the reduction and replacement of single-use plastics,” will be extended, as reported by the Ministry of the Environment (MiAmbiente ), through the Environmental Performance Verification Directorate.
The national director of Verification of Environmental Performance of MiAmbiente, Miguel Flores, explained that the law should have entered into force on November 6, 2022, but to ensure the proper implementation of the Law, consensus was achieved from all the institutions linked to this issue, to establish the extension and thus give the time to develop the due process of conformity for the entry into the country of the products that will be used as replacement alternatives to those stipulated within article 9 of the aforementioned law.
The first phase of this law restricted trade in ear swabs, plastic laundry covers, plastic balloon sticks, plastic toothpicks, plastic cocktail sticks, plastic candy sticks, and can rings.
They stressed that the extension will be from November 7, 2022, which will give time to the laboratories in charge of carrying out the sampling and testing that can develop the appropriate certification process that enables the entry of products made with reusable, recyclable materials, biodegradable or behaveable as a replacement for the use of single-use products or plastics.
