Representatives of the indigenous peoples of the world arrived at the Colombian pavilion at the World Climate Summit (COP27), which takes place in Egypt, to recognize President Gustavo Petro as the “honorary leader” of these communities.

The president and the Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, Susana Muhamad, listened to the seven leaders of the ethnic socio-cultural regions, and met with representatives of the communities of Russia, Sweden; Pacific Indigenous Peoples of Australia; United States and Nepal, among others.
Within the framework of the event, Petro assured that the indigenous communities have been the only ones to have a legitimate concern to protect the Amazon rainforest.

“The communities represent a great contribution to humanity, today we know what the jungle means and its importance in the fight against the effects of climate change,” said the president.
And he added: “We proposed that debt be exchanged for climate action. The way to finance adaptation to climate change must be through external debt resources, that is, it makes no sense that we have to borrow more to be able to finance our own adaptation”.
