MIAMI, United States. — “The life of Félix Navarro is in danger in prison.” Thus he assured Radio Television Marti the Lady in White Annia Zamora, who obtained the information through fellow activist Sonia Álvarez, wife of the political prisoner.
The leader of the Party for Democracy Pedro Luis Boitel is being held in the Agüica prison, in the province of Matanzas, where he is serving a sentence of nine years imprisonment.
“Félix, this past week, they gave him the right to a one-minute call. He is very sick, he has a lot of colds, he felt bad. The life of Félix Navarro is in danger in the prison, as all political prisoners are in danger at this time,” Zamora said.
In addition to the typical shortcomings of life in prison, Navarro is only allowed to receive visitors every 45 days, too long for a person with diabetes.
“Since October 11, Felix has not been seen. It was the last time Sonia saw him, on October 11. Every 45 days, a person gets sick in Felix’s health conditions, and only every 45 days is he allowed to see two hours. Sonia takes the medications that he needs as a diabetic every 45 days. In the prisons there is nothing. In the prisons they have what the family brings them with so much sacrifice”, added the Lady in White.
Félix Navarro, 68, was arrested days after the July 11 protests in Perico, Matanzas, when he was accompanying the relative of one of the arrested protesters to the local police unit. The opposition leader was taken to prison that same day.
Navarro was sentenced at the beginning of the year for the alleged crimes of attack and public disorder.
