The deputy prosecutor of Rio Branco, Charline Ferreyra, managed to lead an abbreviated process to William Barbozanow a former official of the Cerro Largo Intendancy and member of Open Council, and that he be sentenced to two years in prison with effective compliance. He was convicted of a particularly aggravated crime of smuggling, after a huge amount of alcohol was found in his home illegally entering the country.
When his house was searched, there were 250 cases of vodka, 216 cases of whiskey and also 354 boxes of shoes and slippers. He was also seized four vans and a truck.
In total, there were more than 3,000 bottles of vodka and 2,500 of whiskey. The Prosecutor’s Office estimated the value of the merchandise at more than $10 million. He had fled when he learned of the raid and turned himself in on Monday at the Rio Branco Departmental Prosecutor’s Office.
“Surely” he will be expelled from Cabildo Abierto
As this case was made public, the Cabildo Abierto leadership became the focus of attention, since the former official is a member of said party.
When consulted in this regard, the lobbying senator, Guillermo Domenech, assured that “we are surely going to expel him from the party.” For his part, the deputy of the same party for the department of Cerro Largo, William Caballero, affirms that he has requested that he be expelled.
Deputy Martín Sodano, also from CA, told the newspaper The Observer that, indeed, Caballero made the request, and says that he delivered a letter “by hand” to the interim mayor of Cerro Largo, Fernando Gamarra, in which he requested that Barboza be dismissed for “lacking confidence” in his position.
On the same day he also “asked the party to dismiss him for the fouls he committed,” Sodano added.
