The main promoter of the event in Mexico of the Political Conference of Conservative Action (CPAC) is the far-right actor and activist Eduardo Verástegui, who has been involved in various controversies due to his political positions, such as when he described dangerous criminals
to the ministers of the Supreme Court for declaring the criminalization of abortion unconstitutional or for stating on Twitter that he did not trust the vaccines against covid, which earned him the suspension of his account for a few hours.
The organization Movimiento Viva México, headed by Verástegui, has convened the conservative conclave for November 18 and 19 in Mexico City, in the exclusive area of Santa Fe.
This forum will bring together dozens of conservative and far-right personalities from the United States, Latin America, Europe and Asia.
One of the confirmed guests is Steve Bannon, who was a strategist for former Republican President of the United States Donald Trump and accused of having instigated the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
A federal judge sentenced him to four months in prison after finding him guilty of contempt of Congress, because he refused to testify for those events that caused shock on a global scale.
Bannon was also charged with fraud in a fundraiser purportedly to expand the border wall with Mexico. He was released on bail and was pardoned by Trump.
Another of the planned speakers, although not yet confirmed, is the Brazilian deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro, son of the far-right president of that country, Jair Bolsonaro, who announced the presentation The influence of Brazil on the continent
.
On October 30, the day of the second electoral round, Verástegui tweeted a couple of photos next to Bolsonaro, whom he congratulated for the victory
. The winner was Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Reagan, Bush, Cheney…
CPAC has been meeting since 1974, mostly on US soil. It is sponsored by the American Conservative Union and financed by more than a hundred right-wing organizations, such as the Young America’s Foundation, the National Rifle Association or the conservative magazine Human Events.
In that year, the inaugural address of the conference was given by the Republican Ronald Reagan, then governor of California, who became president six years later and regularly attended these forums.
In 2011 it was Trump’s political springboard. His participation in this space launched his career within the Republican Party. Two other speakers from that affiliation at these congresses have been former President George W. Bush and former Vice President Dick Cheney, the masterminds of the war against Iraq, where multiple human rights violations were committed.
One more of those confirmed for the edition in Mexico is the former president of Poland Lech Walesa, recognized for winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983 and also for his fervent Catholicism. In 2013 he declared that, being a minority, gay lawmakers should sit outside parliament.
Some of the issues that will be addressed in the conclave are let’s think conservative
, The Civil Society Struggle for Conservative Values
, be a conservative government
, Is there right in Mexican politics?
Y The Future of the Right in America
