Authorities of the Municipality of Montevideo presented a project to install public lighting with LED technology in settlements that do not have lighting and the works are expected to begin in January 2023 and finish in December of that year.
During the presentation, which was held at the Casa de la Pólvora Cultural Center located on Cerro, the Mayor of Montevideo, Carolina Cosse; the director of the Department of Urban Development, Martín Delgado; and the director of the Public Lighting Technical Unit (UTAP), Pablo Chavarría; accompanied by the mayor of Municipality A, Juan Carlos Plachot, the director of the Public Spaces Division, Natalia Castro, and other departmental authorities.
With the implementation of “Montevideo lights up”, the neighborhoods with the greatest lighting needs will be served, both in residential and public spaces, with the aim of providing greater efficiency and light quality. Around 4,500 new LED technology lights will be installed with an investment of 7 million dollars to increase lighting coverage in Montevideo, responding to neighborhoods with the greatest lighting needs.
The placement of public lighting will be worked on in 88 settlements and, in addition, in 20 neighborhoods, which will be defined in conjunction with neighborhood councilors, in a participatory process that includes consultation meetings and suggestions with neighbors from each area.
Currently, the commune is also making progress in replacing the existing spotlights in Montevideo with LED lights.
This year 2022 will culminate with 37,000 new luminaires replaced, and there will be some 33,000 left to change in 2023, fulfilling the plan to replace 70,000 lights in Montevideo with lamps with the new technology.
