The Secretary of Health of the Government of Zulia, María Moreno, explained that after an African snail is captured, it must be placed in a container with water, salt and lime. Subsequently, it will be buried, at a depth between 50 or 60 centimeters from the ground and cover it with lime and then sand.
María Moreno, Secretary of Health of the Zulia state government, announced this Sunday, November 6, the joint actions with the Ministry of the Environment, environmental associations and the Mayor’s Office of Maracaibo, for the eradication of the African snail in the Zulia capital.
The official explained, from El Milagro avenue, the procedure that people must follow, in case of locating a colony of this particular species of snail, which is characterized by being invasive and by representing a risk for crops, the health of people and pets.

“Under no circumstances should you have direct contact with this animal. Latex gloves or plastic bags should be used to prevent the slime from coming into contact with the skin of whoever handles it, since this animal is a carrier of multiple diseases.

Notify the 800AMBIENTE presence of the African snail
In the tour of the area where a considerable number of snails were sighted, the official was accompanied by: Heraclio Moreno, director of Environmental Health of Zulia state, Ernesto Ibarra, Secretary of Security and Public Order of Zulia state; Lorena Petit, president of the Regional Autonomous Institute of the Environment; José Sandoval, president of Mapache Ecoaventura; Salie Deivis, president of the Gato Feliz Venezuela Foundation and representatives of the Association for the Defense and Protection of Animals (Asodepa).
José Sandoval, president of Mapache Ecoaventura, recommended that if the presence of the African snail is detected, they should be communicated through 800AMBIENTE, so that this agency of the national government prepares a registry, a census, and takes the coordinates of the colony of snails, which will allow knowing the number of these invasive animals and their location.
