President Gustavo Petro arrived in Egypt this Sunday to participate in the COP27 Climate Summit, a “event of paramount importance” where he will present a “Decalogue of proposals to the world on how to face the climate crisis”.
(President Petro sanctioned the Escazú Agreement law).
It is the first time that Petro, who is trying to lead Latin America in the fight against the climate crisis, visits Africa, and he does so to speak at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP27), an event that began this Sunday in Sharm el Sheikh and that he considers crucial “for the destiny of humanity”, he assured journalists upon his arrival.
“It is about whether humanity can exist on the planet or if we are definitely going down the path of the extinction of life”, and this “depends on the decisions that are made in these types of events”added the president.
Petro said that in his speech this Monday he will present “A Decalogue of Proposals to the World on How to Overcome the Climate Crisis Right Now”.
(Approval of the Escazú Agreement generates discord).
The Colombian president will also call on world leaders to save the Amazon rainforest, which is “one of the climate pillars” of the Earth, and will underline that this ecosystem is “one of the three or four climatic pillars that remain in the world, just like the oceans and the great forest tundras of the north of the planet”.
In addition to participating in COP27, Petro will participate on Monday in a working breakfast on “conserving vital carbon stocks and biodiversity: a key to more efficient and ambitious global action”, which was convened by the French Government.
On Tuesday, Petro will participate in the “High-level regional dialogue: Amazon as a pillar of climate and life balance” and then he will intervene again in the General Debate of COP27, among other activities scheduled on his agenda, according to his office.
The designated president of the COP27 Climate Summit, Sameh Shukri, said on October 27 that this summit of world leaders is expected to “be one of the largest gatherings of climate stakeholders ever organized at a COP, with more than 30,000 registered delegates.”
