Odebrecht, today Novonor, asked the Prosecutor’s Office in Peru that the statements of its former directors be rescheduled. The letter sent by the Brazilian company details that this decision is due to the fact that judicial cooperation between Brazil and Peru has been suspended. The request will affect the testimonies of the executives that were to be given during the next two weeks.
According to the document sent by Odebrecht, there are five officials who will not be able to give their statement in the framework of the investigation that follows former president Ollanta Humala. This occurs despite the fact that after suspending cooperation with Brazil, Judge Nayko Coronado ratified the interrogations of November 7 and 8:
- Marcelo BahÃa Odebrecht, on Monday, November 7
- Jorge Henrique Simoes Barata, on Tuesday, November 8
- Luiz Antonio Mameri, on Monday, November 14
- Hilberto Mascarenhas Silva, on Tuesday, November 15
- Fernando Migliaccio, on Tuesday, November 15
Also, the Brazilian company reaffirmed its commitment to the Peruvian justice system and asked prosecutor Germán Juárez Atoche to request the rescheduling of the testimonials, so that international legal cooperation can be reestablished within that period of time. However, the request to suspend the agreement between the two countries was made at the request of Odebrecht.
For the Brazilian company, the Prosecutor’s Office would have breached the terms of the effective collaboration agreement. In this sense, he denounced “the violation by the Peruvian authorities of the agreement signed between both parties, which includes the ‘non-use of evidence produced in Brazil’ against the company in that jurisdiction.”
