MADRID, Spain.- The United States Coast Guard (USCG) transferred this weekend a group of 43 Cuban rafters to the Bahamas.

As reported by the USCG through the social network Twitter On Sunday night, the Caribbean people were found stranded in Cayo Damas and Cayo Sal, belonging to Bahamian territory.

The transfer was carried out by the crew of the Coast Guard Raymond Evans, adds the information.

Last October, eight Cuban migrants were detained in the waters of the Bahamas, after being discovered off Cay Lobos by a patrol that was carrying out a routine tour, led by Lieutenant Commander Alexis Brown.

After the arrest, the Cubans were transported to New Providence by a Defense Forces patrol.

In the same month, the director of the Department of Immigration of the Government of the Bahamas, Keturah Ferguson, declared that the Executive of his country has spent more than 2.3 million dollars in the repatriation of migrants, mostly Cubans and Haitians, during 2022.

“It costs approximately $400 per person to repatriate to Haiti and $305 per person to Cuba,” Ferguson told a news conference.

Last June, the attorney general of the Bahamas, Ryan Pinder, assured that the numbers of migrants arriving on the shores of his country, particularly Cubans, were “through the roof.”

In this sense, Ryan Pinder pointed out: “We are seeing a significant number of Cuban immigrants entering and we believe that we have to redeploy Immigration officers throughout the archipelago to better combat this.”

From January 2022 to October 2, 2022, the Bahamian authorities had detained 2,804 migrants, including 519 Cubans.
