Political ups and downs shake values in the grain market

the avatars of the war between russia and ukraine and the blockade of the carts of Brazil they generated a strong uncertainty, which by the end of the week seems to tend to calm down, but which allowed closing operations in soybeans at interesting prices.

The release of access to the port of Paranagua on Thursday seems to restore some calm to markets that have once again been impacted by interruptions in supply.

The markets had a very volatile weekwith a very bullish start followed by a sharp drop in prices.

In this sense, it was possible to close operations of new crop wheat over US$315, but those quotes are no longer available at the end of the week. US$300 is again the basis for negotiations, and in barley between US$285 and US$290.

Soybeans consolidated above US$520 Y the rapeseed that was held at US$ 540 They maintain better prices than those of previous weeks.

Meanwhile, in the United States, the soybean and corn harvest is coming to an end and traffic is being reestablished on the Mississippi, whose downspout had been a cause of a drop in prices since the grain could not leave.

Another potentially bullish factor is the unusual cold weather in southern and central Brazil, which may have caused damage to soybeans, corn and rice.

From the markets, attention is gradually shifting to the crops that are already beginning for rapeseed, at the beginning with interesting results of yields of 2,000 and more kilos. It should be relativized that they are not yet indicative of what this year’s productivity will be.

Further away is the wheat and barley harvest, in which case the greatest concerns come from the side of the quality requirements of the malting companies.

Ship transporting Ukrainian grain destined for Turkey.

The numbers

Last year the yield of barley was 4,102 kg/ha, that of wheat 3,985 and that of rapeseed 1,813.

a good year

Regarding the expected yields for this harvest, the director of Unicampo and professor at Udelar Esteban Hoffman opined: “I think we are going to have a good year, complicated in the areas near the Río de la Plata and San José; in Paysandú and Young there are areas where it rained very well. The temperature and light have been an idea, there are very healthy crops and that has greatly lengthened the cycle of the plants. In the areas where it rained, many wheat crops did not get the rain so late because of this lengthening of the cycle. There are crops that are doing very well.”

In such a dry year, the use of irrigation in winter crops has burst. What can be the yield of winter crops under a pivot? Hoffman suggested that it will probably reach 7,000 kilos. In the north and center coast, as well as in the east, in very good harvests, canola irrigated in soils of low suitability achieve close to 3,000 kilos. There is some frost damage, but very little.

The yield in rapeseed may be greater or the same, but there is such an important area growth that it is necessary to be cautious. If they exceed 1,800 it would be an excellent result. In wheat and barley it is difficult to sustain last year’s yields, Hoffman said.
