The political prisoner and president of the Renovating Democratic Union (Unamos), Suyen Barahona, was recognized in absentia with the “Human Rights Award” granted by the Progressive Alliance in recognition of her work as a human rights defender. Barahona was unable to attend the event on November 2 because Daniel Ortega’s regime has imprisoned her since June 2021.
The award was received by Héctor Mairena, member of the National Board of Directors of Unamos. “Recognition to Suyen Barahona, Nicaraguan activist and political prisoner, whose commitment to Human Rights is distinguished by the Progressive Alliance, for successfully concluding our first day of the International Meeting of Social Democracy,” said the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) in its twitter account.

“From Unamos we express our gratitude to the Progressive Alliance for this award, which is a recognition of our president and all the political prisoners who have made the prison the first trench of civic resistance and denunciation against the Ortega Murillo dictatorship”, recently expressed the opposition organization.
Luis Blandón, director of Unamos, assured that this award to the political prisoner is a recognition of the work she has done since before April 2018. «Suyen (Barahona) has been in the front row denouncing the Ortega-Murillo dictatorship so that in Nicaraguan society there is respect for the entire population beyond ideological and religious differences,” he told Article 66.
